11:50 Diabetes and road safety – the hidden epidemic
Kate Walker, Chief Executive, Diabetes Safety
Type 2 diabetes is becoming a crisis for road safety. Prevalence is extremely high and increasing rapidly with consequences for road safety that include hypo episodes, visual impairment as well as other risks that are largely unknown and unmanaged. For instance, diabetes directly causes 770 strokes and 590 heart attacks per week: this is a major road safety risk.
Kate and her team at Diabetes Safety Organisation operate in the construction and transport sectors to raise awareness of the increasing health and safety risks of diabetes. Kate will share some of the findings from recent research conducted in partnership with the Road Haulage Association demonstrating the enormous scale of the problem, the potential consequences for employers and their management of road risk, and how to start getting a handle on managing diabetes in your driving workforce and supporting your drivers.
12:10 Chrono-nutrition and its practical relevance to road users
Anna Earl, Nutritional Therapist, Nutrivival
Anna Earl is a former police officer, now a nutritional therapist specialising in nutrition and lifestyle practices to support shift workers, including those who drive for work. Shift work puts you at an increased risk of a range of chronic health conditions. But there are ways to mitigate this. Anna has studied the field of Chrono-nutrition; the relationship between our 24-hour body clocks and rhythms, food intake and timing, digestion and health, and delivers solution-based programmes to promote health and energy whilst navigating shift work.
Alongside her private 1:1 Nutritional Therapy practice, Anna worked as the nutritional consultant for the National Police Wellbeing Service and is a member of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, advising on nutrition and its relationship with fatigue, aiming to reduce poor road user behaviour caused by sleepiness.
12:30 Intelligent traffic safety equipment
Chris Spinks, Managing Director, Westcotec
Westcotec is a Norfolk-based company specialising in the design, manufacture, and installation of intelligent traffic safety and smart city equipment. Before joining Westcotec, Chris served for 30 years in the Norfolk and Suffolk Police, retiring in December 2015 as a Chief Inspector and Head of Roads Policing and Firearms Operations for both counties.
Chris will share some of his experiences from a long career in roads policing, and look at the technology currently in use to improve road safety. He’ll also look at the new technologies being developed for deployment in the near future to help further reduce road casualties.
As one of Project EDWARD’s founding partners, Chris will also share his thoughts on why Project EDWARD is such a valuable initiative and can become even more so under ARRM’s stewardship.

13:45 Why fast legal support is vital for road crash victims
Raymond Williams, Police Relationship Manager, Slater+Gordon
Being involved in a road traffic collision can be a life-changing event. Raymond works with Family Liaison Officers on behalf of collision casualties and victims' families to ensure they get the compensation and treatment they need quickly so they can start to rebuild their lives.
Raymond will share some of his experience in road safety and also his past career in roads policing and talk about the importance of speedy resolution for casualties, victims and their families.
Slater and Gordon are one of the UK’s leading specialist law firms, partnering with RoadPeace and Brake, and are also partners on the Project EDWARD campaign.
14:05 Why accurate incident reporting is essential to improve fleet safety
Renee Rogers, Founder and Chief Executive, Ono
Slow or inaccurate incident reporting is a massive problem for fleets. It can have a significant financial impact on the business and also negate any opportunities to learn from the incident and remove any systemic or business practice issues that could have contributed.
After 10 years in the bridal industry, dealing with dreamy rails of girly sparkle, Renee somehow transitioned to an operational role within the transport industry! Having grown a fleet from 44 vehicles to 500 through the acquisition of electric vehicles and wheelchair accessible transportation, Renee is now actively revolutionising the way in which fleets manage their vehicle accidents.
14:25 New T.L.C. campaign to promote safer towing
UK Towing Safety Alliance
